Making wardrobe space: The sustainable potential of minimalist‐inspired fashion challenges

Minimalist fashion has become a key element of the wider minimalist movement that promotes reducing one's wardrobe space to bare minimum essential items (or ‘capsule wardrobe’) with few, quality coordinate. Minimalist-inspired ‘fashion challenges’, in which participants are challenged only wear certain number garments over time period, have also gained increasing momentum, particularly USA and UK. This study considers ‘Project 333’ (in must 33 clothes three-month period), ‘Six Items Challenge’ (which requires six 6 weeks), explore their potential encourage sustainable (non-)consumption. is achieved via an analysis 20 blog posts individuals reflecting on own participation two challenges auto-ethnography my Six Challenge. The research reveals while just half mentioned sustainability as motivation or outcome challenge, challenges' focus garment reduction, re-use, repair, not shopping partaking them, renders them driven practice. Almost all personal benefits conducting challenge (such money saved plus greater creativity), could be seen helpful way uptake. However, paper idealisation ‘perfect’ spaces subsequent fashioned identities issues regarding who pecuniary means embrace quantity narrative challenges. therefore concludes do more practices, but they simultaneously raise tensions idealised identities.
